Here you will learn a little of my
family history and how this cemetery came to be:
In 1836, Stephen Lowing walked from
upstate New York to the Grand River Valley. After acquiring land
along the river he walked back to New York to bring back his
parents, brother, and sisters.
Years after the family had settled,
Stephen's brother Holden wished to extend the logging road from
Hudsonville (now 28th Ave) to the river. He asked Stephen's
permission to cut the road across his property. Stephen adamantly
refused.
A few years later when Stephen
wished the road to go through, Holden, the township supervisor, had
the southern most part of his land set aside for a cemetery and
buried a poor charge of the township there. This permanently
stopped the road from continuing on.
For years that lonely grave was the
only one in the cemetery. Later, their parents, Issac and Lavitia
Lowing were buried here.
To locate this cache you will need
to find some information and do some simple algebra:
A=Years between Issac and
Lavitia's death
B=Issac’s age at death according to the stone (he was really
82)
X=(41*A)+1
Y=(2*B)+1
N 42 55.X
W 85 51.Y
