Geocache Description:

Commandant Josef Johannes (Jopie) Fourie is one of the heroes of our history.
He was born in 1878 in the Pretoria District. He was a very proud South African and fought for God and his country.

He got his first taste of war in 1899 when he joint Commandant Badenhorst’s men as a young lieutenant. At Newcastle he got seriously injured with an accident with his horse and was send back to Pretoria. Before he was fully fit, they send him and 15 others to Nooitgedacht, north of Pretoria to stole fresh horses from the English. There Jopie was seriously injured and almost lost one of his legs. He walked with a limp till the day of his death. He was a prisoner of war for two weeks before the peace treaty was signed in Pretoria and released on the 1 July 1902.

Jopie Fourie joined the 1914 Rebellion group as a commandant under the leadership of General J.J. Pienaar, who became the Administrator of Transvaal at a later state.
Boer Generals De Wet, De La Rey, Maritz and Beyers were also part of the Rebellion group against the decision of the parliament to attack South West Africa (Namibia).

Jopie Fourie and his men were involved in a few skirmishes against the government forces. The most important skirmishes were at Sandfontein, Hammanskraal and Nooitgedacht. On Thursday 16 December 1914, Jopie Fourie and a few of his men were captured at Nooitgedacht, but General Pienaar and three of his men escaped.
On 17 December 1914 these 44 rebellion prisoners, were taken to Pretoria prison.

On the 18 December 1914, Jopie Fourie was charged with high treason for fighting in uniform against the government forces.
On the 19 December 1914, at ten o’clock in the evening Jopie Fourie was informed that he was to be executed the next day.
On the 20 December 1914, at five o’clock in the morning Jopie Fourie was executed. He was the only rebellion that paid the highest price for his country by means of execution in a prison.

The monument was moved from Nooitgedacht to this site close to Pretoria on 05/12/1963, as the original site was assigned to black people.
