A challenging hike to remnants of plane crash near Butte, Montana
All 22 passengers and crew on a Northwest Airlines flight originating from Chicago perished here in November 1950. This plane just missed the mountain top preparing for landing in the Butte airport in a blizzard. Walking around the wreckage of the Martin 202 aircraft was quite emotional for us. There is a moving tribute to the passengers and crew posted on a tree. Rather than leaving something in the geocache container, consider leaving something near the memorial plaque – for example a ribbon tied on a nearby tree with your message. To get the most out of this challenging hike, visit the new Butte Archives facility and read the fascinating articles in the November 9, 1950 Montana Standard. We recommend planning your hike from topogs or info from someone who made the trip, because there are several routes. Some folks say they take the direct route straight up from the railroad trestle. We hiked from the old railroad near Maude S Canyon parking lot and made a great day of it (longer but not as steep). You can also take the continental divide trail and bushwhack approx 1/2 mile North at the top. Some start on a quad and bushwhack the last leg. Be aware that the hike is about 2500’ elevation change. Bring a lot of water and enjoy the magnificent views from the top!
