6/24/2008 - The difficulty has been raised to a 3 due to poor
satellite reception in the area.
The cache is a standard ammo box. Tree cover will give problems
with the coordinates. If you find remains of a structure keep
looking for the footings of the lookout tower. The cache can be
found 6 paces away (Approximatly 18 feet) from the northeast
footing of the former lookout tower. When you see a witness
post you know you are getting close.
The Siltcoos Lookout Tower was built in 1933 and was destroyed
in 1959 according to firelookout.com.
All that remains is a benchmark, the concrete footings from the
tower and a few pieces of wood.
The location is in dense 70+ year old second growth timber and a
portion of the access road is now the
Siltcoos Lake Trail. The last portion of the former road to the
lookout is so overgrown it is easily missed as you follow the trail
toward the lake. If you miss the old road when the trail cuts to
the left it is a relatively easy 340' bushwhack to the top of the
ridge line and the cache from the nearest point on the trail.
