Geocache Description:

PLEASE NOTE THIS HAS NOW BEEN REPLACED AND CHANGED TO A MICRO CACHE AS THE ORIGINAL DISAPPEARED! CO-ORDS STILL THE SAME.

Portland has many, many beautiful and interesting little nooks and crannies to investigate. Church Ope is just one of these. This was once the main place of worship on Portland and was built in the 13th century. It has been destroyed by landslips and invasions of French pirates
St Andrew's Church sits halfway down the cliff-side above Church Ope Cove and is overshadowed by the Rufus Castle.
The Southwell Landslip in 1675 caused considerable damage, and the combination of this and its remoteness led to it being closed and demolished in 1756. Much of the stone was used to build St George's Church at Reforne which replaced it.

This cache is NOT pushchair/wheelchair friendly due to the difficult terrain and steps to get up/down to the cache. Also there are, unusually for Portland, trees around and about so signal may be a problem.
