Kellner's Ice Dam 2 - A Schuylkill 100 Cache Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Fried Chicken & Coffee: The February 25th edition of the local paper carried a front page story about Kellner's Dam. Unfortunately, it was about how vandals did several thousand dollars damage to the facility over the weekend. The officers of the Kellners Dam Association have asked the public to report any suspicious activity to the authorities and they will be placing the facility under 24 hour video surveillance. Sorry to see such a nice place ruined. Thanks to everybody that searched for this one.

Geocache Description:

This is the second time I have hidden a cache here. Everyone seemed to enjoy visiting, so I thought I would give this location another try for the Schuylkill 100 event. The Borough of Tamaqua considers Kellner's Ice Dam to be a place of historical note, and a historical marker is located at the entrance of the facility. It reads as follows:

KELLNER'S ICE DAM

This dam was constructed in the late 1800's by Kellner & Co. who operated a slaughterhouse, meat processing plant and icehouse just below the dam on Pitt Street. The purpose of the dam was for harvesting large blocks of ice during the winter months. The ice was stored in the icehouse and used in the meat processing business and also sold to the public. Since the early 1900's the dam has served as a popular fishing hole and ice skating spot.

Come visit Kellner's Ice Dam and good luck at finding the cache! If you found the original, come again, because this counts as another find!
