Geocache Description:

The architects Proudfoot and Bird have made a lasting impression on architecture in Wichita. While not all of their buildings have survived the years, the ones that have stand out as limestone castles on the plains. While you may not recognize the names, Proudfoot and Bird, local Wichitans can easily picture the Scottish Rite Center or the Sedgwick County Historical Museum buildings as purely unique. Those are Proudfoot and Bird buildings. The McCormick Elementary School building is the only remaining school designed by architects Proudfoot and Bird for the Wichita Public School system. Constructed between 1889-90, the original four room building was designed in the Richardsonian Romanesque style. In 1910, an addition to the school doubled the size of the quarried limestone structure. McCormick School had the distinction of being the only school in town with a bell tower with a large school bell. The bell was rung every morning and every afternoon at the start and close of the school day. The original bell was removed in the mid 1930s for safety reasons. On August 9, 1983, through the efforts of Dr. Alvin Morris, Superintendent of the Wichita Public Schools at the time, a reconstruction of the original 1890 bell tower was raised and set in place. In 1978, the school building was declared a National Landmark for its Architectural and Historic significance. The school closed in 1992. The school building is now the McCormick School Museum under the management of the Wichita Association of Retired School Personnel as a service project. It houses on three floors an extensive collection of USD 259 memorabilia. The museum is open Sundays from 12-5 p.m., Wednesdays 9 a.m.-noon. Call (316) 841-6198 or (316) 558-5804 to schedule an appointment. Except for the playground equipment in front of the building, this location should not draw any muggle traffic except at the posted times – so geocaching at any other time should be easy. This is a residential area, so be considerate. The cache is placed in a location to not be disruptive to the neighbors. The downside is, the only way to avoid being disruptive was to make this a micro, but it shouldn’t be difficult to find. Please remember that unless you have received special permission from the cache owner, you must sign the actual log sheet in the container. Online logs will be deleted from geocachers who have not either signed the physical log or received special permission from the cache owner. Look kind of low on the fire escape. Be sure to replace it exactly where found! Please let me know if the coordinates need further tweaking.
