Geocache Description:




This cache is placed on Sugarloaf Peak, an 8200' white granite peak on the east side of the Organ mountains. This isolated peak is unlike any other in the Organs. The peak itself offers great views of the Organs especially Organ Peak and Organ Needle.

To get to the cache you can take the Indian Hollow trail from the Aguirre Springs campground. (There is a $3 fee and it's open from 8-5 unless you're camping.) There are 4 other geocaches along this trail and those serve as good waypoints to stay on the trail which can be a little hard to follow in spots.

This cache will most likely require the use of ropes and other technical climbing gear. There are several rock climbing routes on Sugarloaf--most in the medium 5 range--but the route I took I believe is called the Normal Route and is rated a medium 4. Here's a description of my route:

From the "Under Sugarloaf" cache, I hiked up the canyon on the northeast side of the peak that runs parallel to the north face of the mountain. I didn't hug it too close because it was steeper the closer I got to the high part of the mountain. Eventually I was able to turn and head toward the peak. There is a narrow high saddle at the backside of the peak but about 100' before I got there, I turned and started climbing up a shallow broken up depression at the bottom of the massive rock that makes up the peak. I went up this shallow depression for one pitch which placed me on the smooth north side of Sugarloaf. I traversed across that face for ~100' then climbed directly up to the summit along a good crack and ledge system.
