Geocache Description:

This special cache is a part of the National Great River Road’s 70th Anniversary Geocaching Event. These special caches are located throughout each of the ten Mississippi River states.

Claiborne County has many treasures and Oak Square is just one of them. Oak Square Plantation is a luxurious 1850 Greek Revival mansion of the Old South. Oak Square operates year round as a bed and breakfast inn. Step back in time with guestrooms furnished with family heirlooms of centuries gone by and have a full southern breakfast each morning.

Since Oak Square is also a private home for its innkeepers, please attempt this urban cache only during daylight hours. Stroll along the white picket fence on the front sidewalk and appreciate the beauty of this grand home. The "treasure" is waiting in a little white "chest". Just look around and you’ll soon discover the treasure in “Oak Square”. The cache can been spotted by just taking a relaxing walk through the courtyard and down the path. Be sure to use stealth when retrieving the cache. This is the deep south so, mind your manners and remember to smile. If you see the innkeepers, Martha or Deborah, say "Hello" and "How do you do?". Take a souvenir or trinket, sign the log book and tell of your visit.

Port Gibson is a special retreat with its splendid homes and tree lined streets. This is the town that General U.S. Grant said was "too beautiful to burn" in May 1863.

Claiborne County has many things to offer its guests. Near Oak Square Plantation is the First Presbyterian Church, with its golden hand, and the Chamber of Commerce/ Visitor Center is just a few blocks south of here. All are located on the same street. Two blocks westward is Georgia’s at the Depot restaurant serving low country french cuisine. They’re open for evening meals Thursday thru Saturday. Also be sure to drive over to the Grand Gulf Military Park and go through the museum and park grounds. Brochures have been included in this cache showing other points of interest.

Slow down, relax and enjoy your experience along the Great River Road. Remember to get the special code located inside this cache and record it on the geocaching log sheet for the River Road Event.
