The Ship Inn is a friendly pub with a good range of draught
beers & real ales available. The pub has a restaurant, but bar
meals are also available. The Ship Inn was originally a 17th
century farmhouse, called “White Elms”, which was converted to an
alehouse called the "Sloop Ship" in around 1769. It stands close to
the old track leading to Kirby Quay, which was once the commercial
hub of the village.
The Essex International Jamboree
2008 was attended by over 10,000 Scouts and Guides
camping at the event and around 4,000 day visitors. The theme of
the Jamboree was conservation issues, including protecting the
environment and the plight of endangered species of animals. The
Jamboree was supported by over 2,000 adult Scout and Guide
volunteers.
