Geocache Description:

This cache is part of the Tonteldoos series of caches in South
Africa. This been Tonteldoos X. The cache will take you to the site
of one of the British Empires worst defeats in war. The
co-ordinates are for the entrance to the Majuba camp ground and a
small fee is payable at the gate. The cache is at the top of the
mountain as are all the clues. Parking is available at the bottom
of the mountain. Camping is also available.

The battle of Majuba was fought on the 27th of February 1881 between the forces of the Queen under the command of General Colley and the Boers under the command of General Smit. In the early hours of the morning of the 27th February, Colley reached the summit of Majuba with the hope of surprising the Boer forces who held the mountain during the daytime. But through the carelessness of his men and a general lack of organization all that was about to change later in the day... This is a multi stage cache with a puzzle to decipher. You will encounter various places to visit in regards to the Battle of Majuba fought on the 27th February 1881. There are a few waypoints that you will be able to find clues to the location of the final cache.
Waypoints are not necessarily in order and depends on how you find your way around the mountain as there are various routes to get to the top. The final cache is near one of the waypoints so if you are lucky you will find the cache easily. All the clues relate to letters on memorials. Convert these letters to numbers, ie: A=1, B=2, C=3…. And so on through to Z=26. All the waypoints are at the top of the mountain and each will need to be visited to get the clues as to the location of the final cache.

Look for the following clues at each of the waypoints:

A: A plaque on the ground depicts the name of a Koppie what is the second letter of the name
B: Plaque with the Position of 58th foot first letter second line

At a memorial stone with the names of men who fell during the battle:

C: Under the list of Privates left column second name fifth letter in the surname
D: Last letter of the drummers surname
E: Last letter of the Sergeants surname
F: Two privates have a similar spelling of their surname but it changes from the fifth letter, what is this letter in the second surname

There is a date, Oct 1972, on this monument, on this plaque you will find 3 clues:

G: Second letter first line
H: Thirteenth letter first line
I: Tenth letter first line

At this monument there is a cross in memory of a General who fell here get the clues to the following:

J: Second word, third letter
K: Second word, second letter
L: First word, third letter

Final co-ordinates can now be worked out as such:

E (B+L+K) ° (H*2+L).(A)(C-2)(E-2)

There is a small fee for entering the Amajuba terrain, camping and accommodation is available. Facilities are also available for picnics and braai's.
