Louis Dearborn LaMoore was born of French-Canadian background on March 22, 1908 in Jamestown, ND. He will thus be known forever as Louis L'Amour.

Though he left school in the 10th grade Louis had a thirst for knowledge. Throughout his life Louis haunted libraries and bookstores across the country and all over the world. Often he went without meals in order to afford to buy books.

Since his death from lung cancer June 10th 1988, Bantam Books has continued to release the work of Louis L'Amour and his writings still remain enormously popular; most have gone through multiple printings. When he passed away, all 101 of his works were in print (86 novels, 14 short-story collections and one full-length work of nonfiction) and he was considered "one of the world's most popular writers".
