I-81 Bridge Overlook Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

Paganmen: These new trails do not seem to be maintained by the county anymore. They are overgrown and do not seem to be passable by mountain bikes or hikers. I am sending this one to the archives.

Geocache Description:

*9 NOV 08, THERE IS A NEW RED AND WHITE REFLECTIVE SIGN POSTED AT THE ENTRANCE WHICH STATES, "NO BIKING OR HIKING DURING HUNTING SEASON EXCEPT ON SUNDAY". Hunting season is through November. As stated below, for your safety, please follow the hunting schedules while geocaching.

*Listing updated on July 10, 2008 and July 18 to note the new gate on the road and new signs for trailheads and also hunting notice.

This cache is located on the beautiful New River Trail, a hiking/biking trail near exit 105. Just past the cache is a great view of the I-81 New River Bridge and the Claytor Lake dam breast. You would think that this is located in Radford or Pulaski County but it is actually in Montgomery County.

This would make a great stop for I-81 traveler's who want to get out and stretch their legs and take in some scenic views. You can swap some travel bugs as well.

Northbound, take exit 105 and first left onto Little River Dam Rd. First left onto Peterson Dr. Go to end of road where there is a new green gate with a passage on the side for bikes and walking. Southbound, take exit 105, bear right and then first left onto Little River Dam Rd. Rest rooms at nearby gas station.

Park your car and walk a short distance up road. You will see the trailhead on the right with a new sign "New River Trail". The trail is very easy to walk and is well maintained for hikers/bikers. Walk will be about 1 to 2 tenths of a mile. Cache is located about 25' off trail. Enjoy the walk and the view!

WARNING: This land is permitted for hunting and it is highly recommended to avoid during this period. Treat this as you would any land where both hunting and caches would be located. This year, 2008, the rifle hunting season is Nov 15 - 29. Archery and muzzleloader would pose a lesser threat. Archery is Sep 6 to Nov 14. Muzzleloader is Nov 1 - 14. There is NO HUNTING allowed on Sundays and that would be a safe day for hikers/bikers.

Cache started with:
