Geocache Description:

Cache is placed near Terrace Hill Viewpoint. It is a regular tabloc box containing the usual assortment of swaps, log book and even a camera to take your pic with. Tree cover has reduced accuracy to 15 feet, but I'm sure that won't stop anyone.

Picnic tables nearby and weather permitting is a beautiful spot for some lunch.

Minnowburn - Care should be taken with young children as some paths go along the rivers edge. Disabled and pushchair access is possible to the cache site along the road at N54 32.733 W005 56.988

BE CAREFUL AT ALL TIMES AS THE ROADS CAN BE BUSY AND TRAFFIC MAY NOT SEE PEDESTRIANS AS ROADS ARE VERY TWISTY.

Follow the Red Waymark Trail from the car park, enter the field using the gate and stick to the edges of the field. Please remember to shut the gate. After finding the cache head down Freddy's Steps watching out for the path leading off to the left. Follow the waymarked trail as it is safer than going down onto the main road. Eventually it crosses the road and brings you back via the Lagan river bank to the car park.

A magical area owned and managed by The National Trust. Minnowburn provides endless inspiration for painters and photographers. The area consists of 128 acres of mixed countryside and occupies the lands that lie between Shaw’s Bridge and the Giant’s Ring.

The walks around the property are alive with the sounds and smells of nature, taking the visitor through hay meadows, woodlands, riverbank, farmland and the magnificent viewpoint at Terrace Hill Garden.

The National Trust has developed two walking trails for you to explore. Both are circular trails and start at Minnowburn car park, located beside the Minnowburn Bridge. One walk follows a 2km trail around the property. The other is a 3.2km trail that takes the walker through the Minnowburn and Ballynahatty countryside to the ancient Giant’s Ring Henge monument. The trails are way-marked and there is an array of interesting features to explore;

Minnowburn Beeches: Probably the most famous stand of trees in the greater Belfast area. For over 100 years they have thrown their shade over the Minnowburn.

Minnowburn Bridge: Here the small river flows over gravel beds through the picturesque stone arches of the bridge towards the river Lagan.

Freddy’s Steps: This staircase was first constructed by Frederick Russell in late 1800’s and is the most direct route to Terrace Hill viewpoint.

Terrace Hill Garden and viewpoint: One of the finest viewpoints in South Belfast, with outstanding views across the Lagan valley to Malone House and the Belfast Hills beyond. Originally constructed in the mid - 1930’s the garden became overgrown and dilapidated. Since 2001 The National Trust has been restoring it to much of its former colourful glory.

Minnowburn Pond: The pond beside the Ballylesson Road has recently been dugout and a path is being put in around its edge. A great wildlife habitat.

The Sandpit field: A wonderful natural amphitheatre. In 1969 a free concert was held here called ‘Pop for Peace’. 3000 young people came to see the bands perform in this wonderful setting.

Minnowburn Meadows: the National Trust has restored three old hay meadows that lie on the banks of the Lagan between the Minnowburn and Shaw’s Bridge. Cut annually these meadows are becoming rich in wild flowers.

Both paths are circular and in parts have difficult, narrow trails, uneven surfaces and steep steps. Their walking surfaces comprise dirt, gravel wooden boardwalk and paved areas. Some parts can be slippery when wet.

For more information or a trail leaflet contact The National Trust at Minnowburn Warden’s office on 02890647787 or email Minnowburn@nationaltrust.org.uk or contact the Lagan Valley Regional Park, Ranger Service.

This cache is near to GCNTQ3 Giants Ring so if you want a longer walk you can take in both caches.
