A cache in a pioneer cemetery. Beware of stickers!
This cache takes me back to the days when I was but a lad, fishing in No Name Creek and roaming the fields with my dog. I wonder how many thousands of miles I must have ridden down this very road, from the time I was 8 when we moved to this area, till I left in 1974?
We are in Monroe Township, Delaware County, Indiana. If you came from highway 67, you drove through the remnants of the town of Progress. Progress was a booming town in the mid 1800’s due to a gas well having been found here. All the trappings of pioneer Indiana were here….blacksmith shop, apothecary, Churches, and more.
Sadly, now, all that remains, are a few houses. Rather ironic that a booming town that collapsed was named Progress.
After leaving the area for a while, I returned in 1980 where I served on the staff at the Church across the road, Tabor Independent Baptist.
Actually, this Church was started in the late 1800’s as a Disciple’s of Christ Congregation. With Progress just down the road, the Church was strong and the community was thriving.
That all ended when the gas ran out.
By 1960 there was not much left in this area. The Church was struggling with a congregation of 20 or so faithful, and feared it would have to shut the doors.
A Baptist Church was looking for a place to meet, and an agreement was reached, and Tabor Independent Baptist Church was born.
Today, Tabor is a thriving Church that has recently built a new auditorium. However, the original Church still stands, and has one of the finest examples of rural stained glass remaining in the area.
The cemetery itself is quite interesting. There are a number of the common stone graves, however, there are also a number of memorials made by the Detroit Bronze Company. They have weathered quite well, compared to the more common stones.
An interesting note about this area…as long as I can remember, there have been sighting reports of Cougars in this area…within an area of about 10 square miles. They have been sighted by police officers and DNR officers, as well as the general public. I, personally, have never sighted a cougar, however, in about 1966 or so, a friend and I found some VERY large cat tracks right along this very creek. The most recent reports of cougar activity in this area came in the last week of June, 2008, and is reported in the Muncie Star Press of Saturday, June 28th, 2008. I personally know one of the persons who saw the cat…I graduated from High School with him…and I believe him to be a person of honesty and integrity.
So, are there Wild cougars in this area? I don’t know. But…this just gives you one MORE reason to never attempt a cemetery cache after dark.
Now, for the cache itself. It’s a Rubbermaid container with camo tape. Please park in the Church lot, do NOT park in the driveway (it’s private property) and please be respectful if you cache while there is activity at Church. Also, if you find any trash on the roadside, please take it with you when you go. Any logs indicating night caching will be promptly deleted.
