About the Film:
LOCAL HERO, made in 1983, is a little gem of a movie. This
enchanting tale begins with an American sent to buy up all the
property in a small coastal town in Scotland. Nothing normal or
predictable happens from that point on. Wonderful characters and
performances abound throughout the film. Peter Riegert plays the
man with a mission and he is joined later in the film by his boss
played by Burt Lancaster. The Scottish writer-director of this
film, Bill Forsyth, is a genius with presenting us with his
wonderfully quirky townsfolk.
About the cache:
There is no one who qualifies more as a “local hero” in Vero
Beach than Waldo Sexon. Originally a citrus farmer from Indiana, as
far back as the early 1900s Waldo set out to develop Vero Beach
into a tourist destination. Many of the landmark buildings and
developments are still around today. All were established by him or
his partnerships in the early 1930s and all are listed as
historical sites. And no account of Waldo’s life lacks an attempt
to describe his unique personality. He has been called an
“imaginative entrepreneur”, an “outrageous screwball” and “one of
the most colorful persons that Florida had ever known.” It is for
this reason that the theme and tone of the movie LOCAL HERO fits so
perfectly with our cache’s location.
