Shire’s Treasure #3. Brings you to Caringbah. Originally the district was called Highfield. The name changed when the Sutherland - Cronulla steam tram service commenced in 1911. Caringbah said to be the Aboriginal name for the small marsupial called the pademelon or red necked wallaby. It is also said to be a corruption of the Aboriginal name.
Residential development occurred from the late 1930s and boomed after World War II. At this time, Caringbah was the major centre of the Shire, a situation which ended with the opening with the opening of Miranda Fair in 1964.
The main street is the Kingsway which is where the train station is located. There are a number of shops offering small boutiques, eateries, sports and leisure shops, and a Library. Also featured is a selection of banks and two medium sized shopping centres.
Also featured in Caringbah, off the Kingsway and into Jacaranda Street, is Caringbah Leisure Centre (formerly Caringbah Swimming Centre). Here you can find an Olympic sized swimming pool and a children's wading pool. Activities such as aerobics, and squash etc, are also available here. On the outskirts of the leisure centre there is a full size YMCA with all the facilities.
This cache brings you to Kareena Park. This park is ideal to bring the family to as it has picnic areas with BBQ's a walking track, duck pond. After you have relaxed in Karrena Park, go next door and check out the lovely Camellia Gardens.
