Geocache Description:

Good access, almost all on fairly level tarmac paths.

Doury Road, Ballymena is the postal address of The People’s Park, a 12 acre park which was voted in the top ten parks and gardens category by viewers of UTV’s Ultimate Ulster in 2007. This road should be used to access the carpark.

Sir Robert Alexander Shafto Adair who later became Lord Waveney employed 50 labourers and they worked for six months to create the park entirely at his own expense. The 45 acre park, as it was then, was officially opened in August 1870.
In designing the park he made use of the millpond, which was originally formed to service industries near the heart of Ballymena. This large pond lies to the southeast and the Cottage Hospital built in 1882 can be viewed on the southeast bank. Shelterbelt trees were planted to the west and north and fine stands of Scots pine survive today. Around the park are many interpretative signs, illustrating the birds and trees, which are present.
A listed Gatekeeper’s lodge, drinking fountain and statue can all be found within the park which now has tennis courts, a bowling green, junior play facilities, display gardens, picnic areas and an impressive Pavilion with toilet facilities which were awarded 5* Loo of the year in 2003-2007! The Pavilion has spacious outside decking around the edge of the dam and good close up views of the bird life are possible from here
