Pico do Arieiro is the ultimate destination of your climb from the caches “Aguas dos Tornos”, “Hells Throat”, “Passeio Duro” and “Poço da Neve”. Don’t tell me you took the road! In this case you have to continue your walk to the cache of Pico Ruivo. Then it’s ok :-)
When you think this trail was created only to ease your walk through the mountains, you are wrong. In former days the workers who constructed the levadas, built this trail to have a quicker access from Funchal to Pico Ruivo. Imagine 30 kg sand and cement on your back, a spade in your hand, and then do the walk.
Normally I’m maintaining the cache at 7 o’clock in the morning, while watching the sunrise. It’s breathtaking. You should do this also.
If you decide to walk to Pico Ruivo, you should keep in mind; you are walking on the top of the mountains. The weather can change very quickly. Take an anorak, to eat and to drink with you. Mountain boots are obligatory.
