Geocache Description:

Walk to an old drain, formerly used to float timber. Strolleraccessible (except the last 5 m)

In former times rivers and brooks were used to float timber from the forests into the cities. Few brooks have enough water for this purpose, so dams (forming artificial reservoirs) had to be built. The timber was piled up in the river bed. When the waterstorages were drainded the timber was flushed downstream. The german word for such a dam-construction is „Klause“ (same origin as close).

In the area of Klausen-Leopoldsdorf remnants of a widespread system of these drains can be found. 13 minor and 1 major drain worked together, floating timber as far as Baden. The system was in use until 1939.

This cache is part of a series of caches, dealing with the subject (TAKL = TriftAnlageKlausenLeopoldsdorf). Don't forget to note down the information on the front page of the logbook, you will need it for the Bonus (which will be hidden later).

The Gaisrückenbach-Drain is in fairly poor condition. Around the old gate the dam is falling apart.
The road is open for residents only, you can leave your car at Obergrödlbach. As there are inhabited houses next to the drain I placed the box in some distance. First I tried to find a place on the far side of the brook, but crossing the nettles and thistles is not the nicest thing to do, so I found a more harmless spot.

We need only the last digits of the header-coordinates, all the rest does not change within this distance: N1=287, E1=657
At the coordinates there is a wooden pole (with two „legs“). Take the two-digit number from the pole (it can be found on each leg) as L.
N2=N1-L+15 and E2=E1+L+16 are the decimal minutes of the cache-coordinates.
Be careful with the stone inside the hideout.
