This is our first hide. We come here often and this is one of our
favorite places. We think the history behind it is just as
interesting as the place itself.
"The Oxcart Library"
In 1826 Charles Hyde Olmstead, offered to donate 500 books from
his father's personal collection in Oxford, Connecticut, if the
residents of Lenox agreed to change the name of the area to
Olmstead. In 1829 the citizens of Lenox took a vote and the name of
the township was offically changed to Olmstead. The township of
Lenox is now present day North Olmsted, Olmsted Falls, and Olmsted
Township. The books traveled over 600 miles from Oxford, CT by
oxcart and were stored in settlers cabins. They were the beginnings
of what is believed to be the first publicly owned library in the
Western Reserve which spanned over most of the northeast Ohio area.
The reamining 125 from the original collection are housed and on
display at the place where the cache is near.
