Geocache Description:

Ash Creek Butte is a volcano immediately to the east of Mount Shasta. A moderate hike through open terrain gets you to the top. There is no trail.

I have seen this butte numerous times on Shasta adventures, and a recent outing with the Desert(B)Rats led to the Mama Rat commenting on the need for it to be climbed. Some research and six of us departed on this new adventure. We followed a logging road past Surprise Lake in the north bowl of the peak and followed the snowmobile route arrows to a small tarn just below the ridgeline. We were able to use google earth to help us find this approach. Soon after departing our parking spot we were assailed by stinging nasty little bumblebees, with three of our members bee-ting a hasty retreat. The rest of us carried on, doing a little bees are stinging jig if we dared stop. It made for a fast climb. I hid an ammo can, and the B Rats graciously beta tested the coordinates, pronouncing them good. The views are spectacular from this seldom visited spot, with the entire glaciated east face of Shasta right there. There is a summit register on top as well, with the last log in just at a year previous to our climb. Summitpost.org is a source for climbing information, and I found google earth to be quite helpful in determining our route. Will you be one of the few to sign in? There's a FTF pin waiting.
