Geocache Description:

Welcome to Dinner and a Movie with Trevor and Kate. This falls under the dessert portion of our meal. It is located in Riverside State Park with permission from the rangers. Please stay on the trails and operate under leave no trace hiking guidelines.

Please follow all park rules including Park Hours.

There are several large basaltic knobs that sit like along the edges of the Spokane River. This dark igneous rock known as basalt covers most of southeastern Washington. Any lava with less than 53% silicon is known as basalt and the lesser amount of silicon there is allows the lava to flow miles from its source creating a variety of different types of scenery, including giant rock formations. Different cooling rates due to weather, proximity of water, and the volume of the flow cause a seemingly uncountable variety of types of structures. The rocks are frequently weathered reddish brown, varnished by bacteria to a dark black, or covered with algaes to hues of green, yellow, and red. The Bowl and Pitcher formations are the most popular scenic attractions for many visitors to Riverside State Park. It is a geologic phenomenon resulting from large chunks of basalt being formed by a raging and powerful Spokane River. When you look at all of the nearby formations, think of how the water erosion tears at the smooth rock walls with varying densities. The weak rock crumbles, the strong dense rock remains. Sometimes the river even creates cave pockets inside the rock where driftwood and other debris can be trapped.

Please email us the answers. Do not post them in your log. To be able to log this cache you must do the following:

At the First Waypoint (the bridge) N 47 41.809 W 117 29.861:

1. How far across (estimate) is the river from bank to bank where the bridge is located.

2. Is the flow of water under the bridge turbulent or laminar?

3. In a short sentence, describe the proximity of the river with the rocks and their impact on each other.

At the Second Waypoint (the overlook) N 47 41.864 W 117 29.808:

4. From the high watermark of the river that is at the base of the Pitcher, estimate the distance to the top of that rock formation.

5. Can you make out the rock formation known as the Bowl? Describe its location to the Pitcher.

6. Find the giant rock formation with the inset cave located between the Pitcher and the Bridge. How far is it between the two?

7. Post a picture of yourself with your GPSr at these coordinates with the Bowl and Pitcher rock formations in the background. If you happen to get any pictures of any wildlife, please post them as well.

The Movie: Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969)

Butch and Sundance are the two leaders of the Hole-in-the-Wall Gang. Butch is all ideas; Sundance is all action and skill. They both love robbing banks and trains, sometimes using a little bit too much dynamite! However, the west is becoming more and more civilized and when Butch and Sundance rob a train once too often, a special posse begins trailing them no matter where they run. Now fleeing for their necks, the two friends must stick together and stop competing over the lovely Etta Place. Over rock, through towns, across rivers, the posse is always just a step behind them. When they finally think they have escaped through sheer luck, Butch has another idea, "Let's go to Bolivia". This film was loosely based on true events.
