Geocache Description:

For those looking for an atypical geocaching experience, I recommend traveling to this earthcache. I’ve made the end of the Hunting Island’s fishing pier the dedicated location for this cache because it is as far south on the island as you can travel.

Sea Islands are a chain of tidal and barrier islands on the Atlantic Coast of the United States. They number over 100, and are located between the mouths of the Santee and St. Johns Rivers along the coast of South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. They are noted historically for their distinct Gullah culture and language, especially in South Carolina, and currently for rapid resort, recreational, and residential development.

Sea Islands are popular vacation spots. Many people own vacation homes or condominiums on Sea Islands, and more sea islands are being developed for tourism. However, Sea Islands are fragile, constantly changing ecosystems that are important for coastal geology and ecology. Development has posed dangers to these ecosystems and has also increased the risk of property damage every year from hurricanes.

Sea Islands are long, narrow, offshore deposits of sand or sediments that parallel the coast line. Some barrier islands can extend for hundreds of miles. The islands are separated from the main land by a shallow sound, bay or lagoon. Barrier islands are often found in chains along the coast line and are separated from each other by narrow tidal inlets. The coordinates for this earthcache take over one such inlet.

To log this cache:

1. While traveling to Hunting Island, name at least two other Sea Islands you have to travel over in order to get to this earthcache.

2. Using your vehicles odometer, estimate how long Hunting Island is.

3. Take a picture of yourself at the posted coordinates, which are on the end of a very popular Hunting Island public fishing pier and post it to your log.

4. Sea Islands are under constant threat of erosion. Using the “Score one for the environment” educational sign found on the Hunting Island fishing pier, explain what was built in front of you to insure that this delicate ecosystem survives.
