Julius "Junkie" Fleischmann stopped in the Naples Hotel for lunch in 1946, and he liked the place so much that shortly thereafter he began buying parcels of land around the area.
Julius Fleischmann was heir to Fleischmann Yeast, a company started by his grandfather. Fleischmann's father was a two term mayor of Cincinnatti. Julius Fleischmann, was active in the family business but also owned several hotels, was at one time the president and director of the Ballet Russe in Monte Carlo, and was a renowned yachtsman. Before coming to Naples, Fleischmann was commissioned by the Department of Agriculture to sail the South Pacific and survey plants. Fleischmann also documented uncharted waters, and those charts proved useful for Allied forces in World War II.
Fleischmann was fascinated by the botanical gardens left behind by Henry Nerhling. Fleischmann bought the property in 1952 and began renovations, and changed the name to Caribbean Gardens. The Naples Zoo at Caribbean Gardens is open to the public to this day. Fleischmann was also involved in the preservation and restoration of Old Naples.
Julius "Junkie" Fleischmann died in 1967.
