Kirkyard # 3
Kirkyard, Graveyard, or Cemetery???
This is the third in our series of Kirkyards. A Kirkyard, Graveyard, or Cemetery can differ according to its history and location. This resting place is a cemetery and is distinguished from other burial grounds by the fact that it is purpose built, and not adjoined to a church or place of worship.
(Fir-Conway Lutheran Cemetery)
Skagit County, Washington
Fir Conway Lutheran Cemetery is often confused with the Milltown Lutheran Cemetery located a short distance to the south. Roots of Fir-Conway Lutheran Church and its cemetery date back to 1888. Initial church services were held in a school house on Fir Island. In 1896, the Ladies Aid Society built a small 24' x 42' x 14' church and was in use for several years. In 1917, the Conway Norwegian Evangelical Lutheran Church united with the Fir Church and became the Fir Conway Lutheran Church with O.E. Heimdahl serving the new Reverand.
Today, Fir Conway Lutheran Church (Exit 221 off I-5, west side of Conway) is one of the most beautiful churches in the Northwest. Inside the church, there's a lovely sanctuary and one of the finest pipe organs in the area. The current Sunday school building was built in 1957 on the site of the old Fir Church and was connected to the church building in 1992.
