Geocache Description:

Whychus (Why-Choose) Creek is a locals dream for its unique springs, scenic views, and recreational opportunities. It flows from high in the Cascade Mountains through the City of Sisters on its way to the Deschutes River.

The headwaters of this creek comes from seven remnant ice age glaciers within the Three Sisters Wilderness area. The creek is created by glacier melt and is about 45 miles in length and drops 8000 feet over its journey. Due to the unique hydrology and geology of the volcanic area, 89% of the water flows as groundwater under the creek to emerge as springs downstream.

Along the river, the Forest Service has created fairly rustic campsites for people to enjoy. Please use these areas if you are camping in this area, and remember to leave the site cleaner than you found it.

The cache will vary in difficulty depending on the time of year that you visit this area. There may be a few small streams that you will need to cross in order to access this cache.

Directions: Depending on where you are coming from, you will need to get onto the McKenzie Highway. This is the old road that will take you over the McKenzie Pass. Once you pass the Middle and High School, you will see a sign for Pole Creek and Whychus Creek. Turn left onto this road, which is Forest Road 15. This road will be paved for these first two miles of your trip, and then will become a gravel road. Continue on the main road until you see a sign for Whychus Creek (5.3 miles from the McKenzie Highway), and take a left here. Follow this road until you get close to the cache. Park in the campground, and enjoy your time!
