A Little History to make this sight more memorable: Sequim Bay was secluded, hidden by the early explorers, because the two existing sand spits hid Sequim Bay. The entrance of the bay was first mapped around 1797 by Captain Henry Kellett, he called the bay Bertodano Cove.

As you look across the bay you will view the site of Battelle Northwest Institute. This was the Sight of the permanent Indian Village called Suxtcikwi’in of S’Klallam Tribe. Here the Indians hunted and searched for clams, protected by the gentle terrain of the spits, and the lagoons of Washington Harbor. The Village described by the late archeologist Erna Gunther. According to her writings of this period had nine dwellings (multiple families shared a dwelling) and a long house, the village was surround by a palisade fence. With coming of the white man this village dwindled, there were many reason, but some were: that the white man brought diseases to the natives and his constructed and destructive life styles pushed the Tribe from this sight. A small commercial cannery with docks were built in 1861. The Spit across from you is called Travis Spit, the point on this spit is called Kiapot Point the sight were the S’Klallam Tribe Moved to for a short time after leaving their Village Suxtcikwi'in.
