Thanks to WV Tim this cache is back in service!
On our recent GAP ride from Cumberland to Pittsburgh we found there were many caches from Cumberland to Meyersdale, but none near Rockwood. Also, most of the caches were difficult to access while wearing bicycle shoes.
We decided to place a cache close to the trail in the Rockwood area. Rockwood is a small trail town founded on the lumber and feed industries. The area chosen was in honor of a great man who spent many, many hours as a volunteer for the Somerset County Rails-to-Trails Assoc. (SCRTA)helping to clear and maintain the Somerset County portion of the GAP trail. He was a SCRTA Board Member and a trail ambassador assisting those in need of information and repairs. He rode the trail almost daily when conditions allowed. He passed away unexpectedly in June 2007, 2 weeks before he was to join us in a ride from Pittsburgh to D.C. Growing up in Rockwood he spent many times playing in the area of the cache. Lastly, he was a nature photographer and took many pictures of the wildlife and wildflowers along the GAP. He used the pictures in slideshow presentations promoting the GAP.
Please do not disturb the wildflowers when accessing the cache. It is in a beautiful area, especially when the wildflowers are in bloom from June to late August.
A cacher who lives a few miles from the cache will be checking on it regularly and doing maintenance if needed.
