Geocache Description:

This is our first cache, designed and placed by the Mimring youth movement. Container once held nuts. Limited room for much other than the log and the small toys provided by "leeches"

"Without the pen of Paine, the sword of Washington would have been wielded in vain" (John Adams). June 2009 represents the 200th Anniversary of Paine's death and attempts are being made to establish Paine days in all 50 states. Through pamphlets like "Common Sense" and "the Rights of Man", Paine argued for the end of slavery and monarchy, was in favour of public education, women's rights, animal's rights, pensions for the elderly and a guaranteed minimum wage, all ideas before his time. But he was also author of the Age of Reason, written inside a French prison cell, that is seen as promotion of atheism; although the focus of his criticism was organised religion in general. Either way, that has soured his image in the United States, then and now. Should this English-born jounalist and revolutionary propagandist have his own Commemorative day?

October 2009 Update: As is fitting for someone who inspired grass roots calls for Independence (remember before Common Sense less than a 1/3 of the delegates were promoting Independence), there were lots of locally inspired observances (see (visit link) ), but few if any States offically recognised Paine and his contributions
