Geocache Description:

This cache takes you on a paddling tour of the reservoir above the dam in Mantorville. This is the Zumbro River, and the "island" in the lake is known as Goat Island, so I thought I'd call this Goat Lake. Bring your kayak, canoe, rowboat or even a rubber raft to make the trek around the lake.

There are a few ways to gain access to the water: a beach entrance from the sand on Goat Island, walking out on the dam from either side or stepping on the concrete slabs just upstream of the dam on the main park side. Please be careful not to damage the dirt banks of the river. Parking is available at the main park (posted coordinates) or at the south parking lot (waypoint below)

To solve the mystery and determine the final location of the cache, you must paddle up the lake until you can't paddle any more (where the river splits in two around an island). This takes you on a 1.8 mile (roundtrip) tour of the lake. On your trip you will come across a group of rust-colored X's that lay flat against the sky. From directly below, count the X's (it's between 1 and 10)...this number is Y. Take this number and calculate the final location.

  • N 44 Degrees 3.884 Minutes
  • W 92 Degrees 45.Z Minutes Where Z = (Y x Y x Y) + 787

The cache container is a larger red water bottle. You will not need to step into the grass to make the find. Please stay off the banks of the river, as they are easy to erode. Please be sure to screw the cap tightly...high water will likely come in to contact with this cache.

This cache marks the end of my spring string of caches. I had saved up a half dozen of caches over the winter and started putting them together in April. I gave myself the goal of two a week to keep new caches rolling out for area cachers. I told myself I wouldn't place an average cache just to make my quota, so I've been a little challenged to keep it going. 12 weeks and 24 caches later I'm going to slow down and switch to the hunt instead. Don't worry though, my list of cool cache ideas is still pretty long...Happy Caching!

GOOD LUCK!
