Geocache Description:

The Circle of Stones Cache

Terrain is along an old trackway. Easily walkable apart from a couple of spots where it gets a little boggy – walking boots are essential. The container is small - room for a few small swaps, TBs and coins.

This is a series of four caches placed along an old trackway that at one time was one of two roads over the Black Mountain to Brynaman. At one time it shared the same status on maps as the A4069 (favoured by Top Gear to film dramatic shots of cars driving along mountain roads). Three caches (including this one) are regular hides and the fourth is a bonus – collect the clues on the lids/inserts/logbooks of the regulars to get the coordinates for the bonus.

A curious location here. The trackway makes a strange dogleg at this location and very close to the cache is a strange circular stone structure. The map lists enclosures and cairns at this location but the structure is a relatively modern build – possibly by local farmers for sheep? Leave the structure alone (whatever it is) the cache isn’t hidden in it.

Just north of this location (you’ll have just passed it if you’re doing the series) another ancient road from Garnant on the Amman Valley, crossed here at a crossroads. Little evidence if any remains of this road now, but like this one, in old maps it has the same status as other existing roads on today's maps.

If you're doing the series, the best approach is from a small car park located at 51°51.466'N, 3°52.675'W where the trackway starts as it branches off an existing narrow road.

As an individual cache, you may find other approaches are easier - such as parking at N51°49.757 W3°51.515 (near the new-fangled SPECS, solar array and generator - how did they get planning permission??) and strike west through the old car park to reach this one. Doing 3, 2, 1 has the advantage of building to the reveal - as you pass 1 the view opens up spectacularly towards Pont Aber, Llangadog and Myddfai; and then as you descend the towards the little car park Castell Carreg Cennen perching on the rocky crag will wow you with the view along the obligue of Tair Cairn Uchaf/Isaf and the upper Towy Valley. It's up to you.

If you're planning on completing the series, don't forget to copy the numbers from the insert in the logbook for the bonus cache. Also, if you're walking to the bonus cache from here, it can get exceedingly boggy over the last stretch, especially if its been raining...
