Geocache Description:

This is a nice little place which many will be unfamiliar with due to poor signposting, or as at present no sign post.

The wall of the cashel (a defensive enclosure of stone) is 9 ft to 12 ft thick, and encloses an area 132 ft by 108 ft. It was rebuilt after an excavation in 1926 for the Belfast Natural History and Philosophical Society.

Within the cashel are a number of stone formations which may be the remains of dwellings and the souterrain. This is a subterranean passage which may have been a defensive structure during times of attack or for grain storage. It has a main passage 50 ft long and measures 37 ft wide at the far end which is an exit passage and a chamber 16 ft by 4 ft. It was thought to have been constructed by excavating trenches and holes and making walls with dry stone, and roofing with stone lintels. Some of the lintels were replaced with concrete during and since the excavation.

Watch your head and bring a torch. A good one for the kids to explore.

There is an information board at the site.

The cashel is on the Moneyscalp road, directions from the nearest towns are below.

From Bryansford, go towards Hilltown and take the first road on the Right outside Bryansford (Moneyscalp Road). The cashel is about 2 miles down the road on the right.

From Castlewellan
Take the Dublin Road towards Hilltown, and the Moneyscalp Road is 4th on the left. It is up this road 0.2 miles on the right.

There is no car park at the site. Please park with care on this narrow road.

The cache is NOT placed in the cashel. No stones need moved. The cache is accessible from the roadside so please listen out for traffic. Please supervise children very carefully. It is camouflaged and a glove may be handy.

I have marked this cache as wheel chair accessible as I think it is, if I am mistaken sorry for the inconvenience and please let me know so I can edit the listing. Sadly the path to the cashel is not wheel chair accessible, sorry.

Take care on the narrow roads. Don’t make this a cache and crash
