Aspen grove in Southern California? Not likely, except for this one isolated location in the San Bernardino Mountains. The area will start to change colors soon, and if you like fall foliage, then this will be a very beautiful spot in the up coming weeks. I placed this cache on the second day of fall. The color change here in So. Cal. does not take too long and will start right after the first good freeze up here. As the colors do begin to change, if you watch as you drive up past Mill Creek, you will notice the different colors that get lighter as your elevation increases. Really one of the nicest places in So. Cal. to be in the fall.
The cache is located in Heart Bar on the way up hwy. 38 to Big Bear. It is a drive of approximately 2.7 miles from the hwy. to the parking area. Then an easy walk on a trail to the cache site.
*A word of caution though, about 2 miles of this is a dirt road that is well maintained. If you are familiar with the other roads in the area, you will have no problems. I saw a Honda and VW Jetta along the way. This is just my opinion though, I drive a raised 4X4 Suburban, so my idea of a well maintained road and yours could differ. If you made it to our Santa Ana River Road Cache, you should have no trouble with this road. There is a specified parking area for the beginning of the hike on the right side of the road. Exact directions will be in the hint section. I would hate for anyone to make this trip and then not be able to find the cache. Take your picture, sign the log book and take a few minutes to enjoy the sound of the leaves rustling in the wind. I will pick up the camera from the cache before it gets too covered in snow and will post the pictures on our web site.
