jengoround: After a maintenance check, looks like the entire hillside has been logged and stripped so this location is definitely gone.

Geocache Description:

Cache is at a roadside pulloff just inside the Lewis County line. Should be easy to LOG a find. Container has room for travelers.

Welcome to Lewis County Tennessee! Created in 1843, the county name honors the famous explorer Meriwether Lewis who died about 6 miles from where this cache is located.

Most famous as co-leader of the Lewis & Clark Expedition sent to explore the Louisiana Purchase, his fortunes seem to have gone bad after his return in 1806. Lewis was on his way to Washington to answer charges of misconduct in his job as territorial governor when he stopped for the night along The Natchez Trace at Grinders Inn. Sometime during the night he died leaving us all to wonder to this day: suicide? murder? Historians still argue both sides today. A short drive west on Highway 412 from this cache will take you to Meriwether Lewis Park alongside The Natchez Trace where you can visit Lewis' monument and a reconstructed cabin much like the inn where the trail ended for Lewis. In 1843 Lewis County was established as a lasting monument to the famous explorer who is buried here.
