This cache is located near a very modest rest stop by the higwhay
24 in Asikkala. The facilities of the rest stop consist only of a
table and a bench along with a litter bin. There is nothing really
special about the place, except the fact that it is very close to a
spot where the early pioneers of geodesy were conducting their
measurements in the 19th century in order to determine the shape of
The Earth. This hill is a part of the Struve Geodetic Arc and on
the hill there is also a triangulation point by the Finnish
National Land Survey. I have been told by those in the know that,
for some reason, no permanent marker of the Struve point was ever
made here and the triangulation tower has also collapsed and all
that is left is a pile of rotten wood in the forest. The
triangulation point is marked on a stone with carvings and an iron
bolt.
The forest around the hill has a nice air to it and that alone
makes this spot worth stopping, if the historical aspect does not
stir anything in you. There's also a
weathercam by the Finnish road administration nearby and you
can just make out the parking place near the upper edge of the
picture.
Tämä kätkö on hyvin vaatimattoman levähdysalueen lähistöllä
valtatien 24 varrella Asikkalassa. Levähdysalueella on vain penkki
ja pöytä sekä roskapönttö. Paikassa itsessään ei ole mitään
erikoista, mutta se on lähellä paikkaa, jossa varhaiset geodesian
pioneerit suorittivat mittauksiaan 1800-luvulla selvittääkseen maan
muodon. Kukkula on osa Struven ketjua ja sen päällä on myös
Maanmittauslaitoksen kolmiomittauspiste. Asioista perillä olevat
tahot ovat kertoneet minulle, että Struven pistettä ei ole
mitenkään pysyvästi merkitty maastoon täällä ja
kolmiomittaustornistakin on jäljellä enää kasa lahonnutta puuta
metsässä. Kolmiomittauspiste on merkattu maakiveen kaiverruksilla
ja rautapultilla.
Kukkulan metsässä on mukava tunnelma, mikä pelkästään on hyv syy
pysähtyä tänne jos paikan historiallinen merkitys ei herätä suuria
tunteita. Lähellä on myös
