Geocache Description:

This is a magnetic nanocache with log only.

This cache has been placed as part of a cache series for the Amite County Bicentennial Celebration that will be held April 27-May 2, 2009. A web site has been established for this celebration: (visit link)

The Winston Wilkinson house was constructed in the late 1840’s on the plantation owned by Winston Wilkinson. He contracted with James Ray Wilson to design and build the home. Wilson is also credited with the design and construction of the Talbert –Cassels home in 1853 on the Berwick Cassels Road. The Cassels home was burned to the ground in 2006 from a brush fire.

The Winston Wilkinson house was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in April 1980 and has since been restored. There are eight rooms, four on each floor. The exterior walls are one foot thick and the interior walls are eight inches thick. Practically all the interior millwork details are intact. Civil War reenactments have been held here and it has been the scene of weddings, receptions, and other celebrations.

This is a nano cache with a log only because I do not have permission to enter the grounds. The cache is in a safe place and should be a quick find. Please look only. Do not attempt to enter the grounds.
