Geocache Description:

let me take you down
cause I'm going to strawberry fields
Nothing is real
and nothing to get hung about
Strawberry fields forever

These are the opening lines to one of the most famous songs by the Beatles, released in 1967. Strawberry Field was a Children’s home in Beaconsfield Road where John Lennon used to play as a child. It was saved from closure in 1984 by a cash donation from John’s widow Yoko Ono, but finally underwent closure in 2007.

The cache is a micro about the size of a 35mm film pot, located a short distance up hill from the Strawberry Field gate. It’s not on private land and you will need to bring your own pencil. To claim your find, as well as signing the logsheet, please post a photograph of yourself with your GPS outside the famous red gates. Solo cachers can hang their GPS on the gate (like me) for a picture as they will be behind the camera and not in front of it. Please take care with children and pets as this is a busy road and the pavements are narrow.

The inspiration for this cache came from the Travel Bug Sgt. Peppers Lonely Heart owned by the Klawitters, that I picked up, and it wanted to visit Beatles locations around Liverpool. As well as the better known city centre locations, it went to various others south of the city including “Strawberry Field” that I’d never visited before. Have a look at the TB page as there are many photographs of it at various Beatles locations.

If you wish to explore the area after finding the cache, go to the bottom of Beaconsfield road and turn left along Menlove Avenue. No 251, “Mendips” was the childhood home of John Lennon. It’s now owned by the National Trust and bears a blue information plaque above the bay window. 20 Forthlin Road (also owned by the National Trust), the childhood home of Paul McCartney, is a short drive away. St Peters Parish Church on Church Road in Woolton is also worth a visit. There is a plaque on the Church Hall wall about the first ever meeting of John and Paul, and Eleanor Rigby’s grave can be found across the road in the churchyard.

Finally, “Strawberry Fields Forever” was released with “Penny Lane” so why not visit Everton and Charlie Dogs Penny Lane cache. Its only a short drive away and is another location for the “must have” photograph of the road sign!
