Follow the main trail...to a side trail (on the right)...to the cache...as you hike towards the Mount Pinos summit. It's located 74 ft. west of a Benchmark. It's about a two mile hike to the summit from the Chula Vista (Nordic Base) parking lot. There are trails that continue on to Mount Abel, Sawmill Mountain, Grouse Mountain, etc.... from this summit which is the highest point (8,831) in Ventura County.
You'll be hiking/biking in a conifer forest. Mount Pinos is in the Los Padres NF on the boundary between Ventura and Kern Counties and is also in the Chumash Wilderness. The summit offers views of northern Ventura County, Santa Barbara County, the Tehachapi Mtns, and the southern peaks of the Sierra Nevada range. You can also see the San Joaquin Valley...and the San Andreas Fault is clearly visible to the northwest...and cuts between Mount Pinos and the mountains immediately to the north.
The Nordic Base parking lot is also a popular place for stargazing. There are campgrounds, trail camps, numerous trails...and snow can last until June on the north facing slopes.
The Nordic Base parking lot...and the trail to Mount Pinos, are at the end of Cuddy Valley Rd. Get off the I-5 Fwy at the Frazier Mountain Park Rd offramp...follow this road to Cuddy Valley Rd. It's warm in the summer and cold in the winter...come prepared...there's lots of year-round activities!
