Carthage Route 66: Just a Stone’s Throw Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

DareGuy: Need to archive this cache. It was either muggled, or the victim of construction and progress taking place here at Stone's Throw. Maybe someday after all their construction is completed a new cache can be placed in this area.

Geocache Description:

Located on The Mother Road, Historic Route 66. Gently sloped terrain. Easy walking, but I do not believe it is wheelchair accessible.
Plenty of room for roadside parking, or use the nearby parking lot (but the lot will be too crowded on performance nights).
Cache is roughly 150 feet off the road, about 100 feet from the parking lot. No bushwhacking required.
This will be a low muggle area, except during theatre practice and performance evenings.

The cache is larger than a medicine bottle, but smaller than an ammo can. As with any cache, please make sure to seal up the container and put it back as you found it for the next ‘Geo-Skulker’. Please let me know if the cache needs attention. This is a wet location, so do not leave any swag in this one, it will become waterlogged, moist, wet., moldy, etc, and will be discarded...sorry and thanks.

My wife (Parapro) and I were infected by the Geocaching bug, and have found it to be a fun source of exercise and ‘together time’. We have enjoyed other’s caches (kudos for some great caches to: spiritguide; Mimi & Pa; KansasRTs; train1904; and to the many others who keep Geocaching fun and exciting here in this area). We decided it was time for us to contribute to the scene.

Now on to this cache site details:

Though we had heard that Carthage had a community theatre, we knew little about it until a friend invited us to a performance. I enjoyed watching the plays so much I tried out for a performance, and have been in five fun productions since.

The grand dame of our theatre, and regular performer Mrs. Betty Bell, provided the following history of Stone’s Throw Dinner Theatre.

THE HISTORY OF STONE’S THROW DINNER THEATRE

In 1928 Carthage Music Club, which was a member of The Federation of Music Clubs, was formed by Mrs. Harry Spradling. In the 1940’s thru the 1960’s the Music Club in conjunction with The Rotary Club and other organizations began performing Musicals in schools, churches and other locations.

In the late 1970’s , as part of the Missouri Federation of Music Clubs, Carthage Music and Theatre Club was formed to broaden the scope of the Club’s organization to include theatrical performances. Once again, productions were held in schools, churches and other locations. We did such musicals as Carousel, Oliver, Fiddler on the Roof. At this time we started having dinner with our performances at Grace Episcopal Church.

On September 11, 1984, Carthage Music and Theatre Club were incorporated as Community Theatre for Southwest Missouri, Inc. The land upon which we are now located was donated to us on May 9, 1988 from Dr. Foster and Hilda Whitten, long-time patrons to the theatre.

On September 10, 1988 the Theatre sponsored “A Night On Broadway”, a Celebrity Auction Fundraiser in which we collected $11,000 to start towards our construction of the present building. After various other funds were collected we built the present structure and had a contest for the name of the theatre. Sonya and Kellie Edwards, daughters of Dr. Bruce and Muffy Edwards, came up with the present name Stone’s Throw Theatre “A stone’s throw from Carthage and a stone’s throw from Broadway”. Sonya and Kellie performed in many of our Musicals and other productions.

Our first show at Stone’s Throw Theatre was in September of 1989 when we did the production of “Harvey”. We own our own building and are governed by a 15 member Board of Directors who are elected from the community at our annual meeting in May. We presently are doing 7 shows a year plus a Murder Mystery on New Year’s Eve.
