Geocache Description:

The terrain rating is rated for those that cannot drive up the hill. It is a short walk on a gravel drive, but it is a steep climb.

I have always been intrigued by the existence of the Catholic Cemeteries in Land Between the Lakes.  Both are located on the main road from the Trace to Wranglers Campground.  Upon further research I found that many of the original Catholic settlers of "Between the Rivers" were German immigrants who moved to the area to work at the Iron Furnaces.  Another interesting piece of the puzzle of this area is the fact that the only church left standing is St. Steven's Catholic Church (a cache "Last One Standing" does exist nearby the church) in Northern LBL.  This church was left standing purely by accident.

The second Catholic Cemetery is located about 0.15 of a mile off of the road.  The turn off is located at N 36° 44.839, W 088° 00.636'.  It is possible to drive up to the cemetery in a 4x4, otherwise I would recommend that you park your vehicle and walk up.  The cemetery is the first stage which is at the initial set of coordinates (N 36° 44.855, W 088° 00.449').

I will have to admit that I reluctantly visited this cemetery.  The online records only show one person being buried here.  I did not know if it would be worth my time to hike up the hill in 90 degree heat to find only one gravestone.  When I arrived at the cemetery I was pleasantly surprised.  The cemetery actually seems bigger than the first Catholic Cemetery, but more of the graves are unmarked.  At the entrance is the gravestone that is reported online.  As I walked around I came across a stone that caught my eye.  At first glance I thought the stone was someone with the same last name as mine.  As I took a double take I noticed that it actually said Fisher...Magdalena Fisher to be exact.  I noticed the name of her husband which seemed familiar.  Looking back through my pictures I took at Catholic Cemetery #1 I noticed that her husband (Nicholas Saffer) was buried there.

When I arrived home I began researching.  I discovered that all of the online sources have Magdalena being buried with her husband in an unmarked grave at Catholic Cemetery #1.  The only possible answer for the oversight is that Magdalena died when she was 53.  1 1/2 years later Nicholas remarried.  I cannot found any other information on Nicholas's second wife (Karolina Arlt), so I wonder if she is the mysterious person buried near his grave.

Nicholas and Magdalena were both born in Germany and immigrated to the United States.  They lived in Pittsburgh, PA and were married on September 18, 1854, in St. Philomena's Church.  After serving in the Civil War, Nicholas moved his family to Kentucky where they settled in Golden Pond.  There is no records of children, but as mentioned earlier Magdalena died at 53 years old.  Nicholas married Karolina Arlt.  She died 24 years after her marriage to Nicholas.  She is listed to have died in Trigg County, so she may be buried somewhere else.

NOTE:  You will need to have visited the cemetery at the German Heritage cache before attempting this cache.

The Final cache is located within a short distance of the cemetery.
Its location is at the following coordinates:  N 36° AA.BCD', W 088° EE.AFC' where
A = The last digit in the day that Magdalena died.
B = The number that is repeated in the year that Magdalena died.
C = The last digit in the year that Nicholas was born.
D = The number of 3's in the year that Magdalena was born.
E = The number that is repeated in the year that Nicholas died.
F = The last digit in the year that Magdalena died.
At the final stage it may be tough to get a reliable satellite signal, but the hiding spot will be obvious if you are in the right vicinity.

I hope you enjoy visiting the "German Separation" at Land Between the Lakes.
