The Ice Age Trail when complete will be close to 1,000 miles
long stretching from Interstate State Park along the Minnesota
border to Potowatomi State Park in Door County. The section through
Chippewa County is particulary stunning and offers some of the best
examples Ice Age geology in the state, particulary ice walled lake
plains, moraines and kettle lakes. This cache is located along one
of the many kettle lakes left behind by the last receding glacier
10,000 years ago.
There are 3 areas to access this cache from:
1: If you havn't done the Ice Age Trail loop and want to, please
park at the Ice Age Interpretive Center (coords below). This cache
can be accessed via the loop trail heading west. Once you get to a
marked trail intersection, depart the loop trail and head west
along the IAT proper. It will be about .35 miles from the
intersection, 1 mile from the Ice Age center.
2: If you've already done the loop and want to experience a
different section of trail, park at the trailhead along Oak Ave off
of HWY 40. (coords below) Walk 270 feet along the road to where the
IAT meets the road. Cache is about .4 miles from parking area. You
can easily access the Isthmus Rest Stop cache from here as
well.
3. There is also a parking area along County Road M, you'll see
the signs, where you can access both the Isthmus Rest Stop cache
and this one. Horseshoe Lake North is about .75 miles from
here.
The section of trail between "Horsehoe Lake North" and the
"Isthmus Rest Stop" cache is particularly nice and travels along
the lake the whole way. Enjoy!
