HIRUNDO – GEOCACHE #3 - LAC D'OR
HIRUNDO is a wildlife refuge of close to 2400 acres of land. Located in Alton and Old Town Maine, The Hirundo Wildlife Trust maintains the Hirundo Wildlife Refuge as a sanctuary to preserve and protect wildlife and habitats. The Trust makes the Refuge available as a living laboratory for education and research, and to promote the public’s appreciation of Nature.
With the gracious permission of the Trustees and caretakers of Hirundo, I have been allowed to place geocaches on the land. The future of this program lies with, you, the cachers. New to Caching??? OR a Veteran ~ Please, please, read the whole page and follow the rules described. Staff of the refuge would be more than happy to assist. There are some very simple and basic rules, which must be followed The future of access for Geocaching purposes on this beautiful land depends on our respect of their land.

After registering, on the trail log ~ take a trail map and head for the blue trail ~ or ~ return to the roadside of Rt. 43, walk back to Gate #1 and follow your GPS to Lac D'Or. If you are able to drive in the gate - you can drive nearly to it. I suggest parking near the flag poles and taking a little walk to enjoy the area and find the cache.
This cache terrain is rated for the walk as if you use the long loop of the Blue Trail from Gate #1!
This is a refuge and there are BUGS - so bring your bug dope! Lac D'or is in a portion of the preserve with some surprises in what you will see. It will afford you the opportunity to see birds, a pond, field and more. Do be aware there is poison ivy in some areas and all kinds of natural plants and habitat.
The cache is an ammo box which contains swag; the usual log book. Please swap equal or swap up whenever possible.
Please feel free to continue to explore after finding the cache. Enjoy the trails, bring a lunch (carry in ~ carry out) and look for creatures big or small. Hirundo staff and trustees hope you enjoy their refuge and look forward to a continued relationship with more caches in the future.
Congratulations to jenny_worcester and penquisscigyy and their boys on their FTF! WOOT!
