Geocache Description:

The cache is located Svalbard and can be reached by boat in summer, or skidoo in winter.

This cache is accessed from Billefjorden. It is close to a cairn built in memory of John Kirton, who was killed in an accident in 1958.


Cairn in Ebbadalen
The cairn has a plaque which reads:

Christopher John Blissett Kirton
17.8.1937 - 26.7.1958
Exhibitioner of Queens' College, Cambridge,
who lost his life while collecting fossils
in the mountain afterwards called Kirtonryggen,
at the foot of which he is buried
thirty miles to the north east of this, the base
of the Cambridge Spitsbergen Expedition 1958.

This plaque to his memory was placed by the
Cambridge Svalbard Expedition 1959

On July 26, 2008, exactly 50 years after the accident, a party consisting of six of the original members of the 1958 expedition visited this spot along with members of John Kirton's family. This geocache was placed at the same time. It is hoped that geocachers may pause and reflect on this story.

The name of the cache commemorates the efforts of a Scottish company which in the 1920s attempted to develop a coal mining operation in the area. Their nearby hut, Skottehytta, has been used by countless scientific expeditions over the years.
