Timeu Creek OHV Recreation
Area
better known as
Vega
A summer drive to Vega through Barrhead up secondary 769 will give
you the opportunity to ride the Klondike Ferry across the Athabasca
River. It is one of the few remaining cable driven ferries in
Alberta. You can camp at the(self register) Klondike Ferry Park on
the east side of the river or random camp off 661 in the ohv
park.
A short drive from the ferry takes you into the pine covered sand
hills of the Timeu Creek Park. The wide transmission line right of
way acts as the main corridor to the deeper reaches of the park. A
little further west are the limited use roads that will take you
large staging area that also double as random camping spots. If you
travel up the right road you will come upon a barely legible sign
informing you of the area. There is also a outhouse of the same age
and state of neglect.
There are numerous branch trails that take you on a tour of the
parks varying terrain. Mid summer allows easy passage over the
dried muskeg in the low lying area getting you to the Timeu creek a
few km north of the staging area. Here you will discover a gentle
flowing stream flowing over a bed of gravel. The creek meanders for
several km before dumping into the Athabasca River.
The medium sized ammo can is hidden on the east side of the right
of way several meters off the trail. It is a short walk from the
main road allowing for a quick find by the caching motorist or ovh
cacher. The cache contains typical dollar store items geared
towards the outdoor sportsman along with a few ready to go small
caches. You are welcome to take one if you are willing to hide it
in the ohv area and list it on geocaching.com. The cache also
contains the usual log book, pencils and sharpener.
