Geocache Description:

Cache is located about 1.5 miles in along the trail to Cascade Pond, south of Blue Mountain Lake. Please log your DNFs!

Cache is a film canister. Cache location is off the trail just before the trail climbs out of a small valley. Cache is winter accessible and is within a few feet of the landmark for which it is named...This is one of the oldest and largest birches I've ever seen. The tree has 4 or 5 large burls (rounded growths) on it. Hence the name.
Tree canopy may make things difficult in summer, but the cache is easy to find once you find the big burl tree.

Getting here: take Route 28 to Durant Road, turn onto dirt road by cemetary (a DEC sign indicates the trailhead). Trailhead is down the dirt road past the cemetary. The trail to Cascade Pond has some elevation and is often muddy, but ends at a beautiful pond with a lean-to for camping.
