A short multi around Inverarity Kirk, known locally as the White
Kirk. The page co-ordinates will take you to one of the gates into
the kirkyard. There is ample parking by the church hall, behind the
church.
The present Inverarity Kirk was built in 1754. This church was
built to replace the church at Kirkton, near to Kinettles approx 2
miles to the NW (across the present day A90). When the congregation
moved churches, apparently some of the gravestones were moved as
well! If you check the gravestones there are some dating back as
far as the 1640s so this story seems to be accurate. Whether the
inhabitants of the graves were "flitted" at the same time is
unknown!!!!
The bell hanging outside the building was cast by Peter Van der
Ghein in 1614 so we assume that the bell as well as some of the
other fixtures and fittings from the old kirk were transferred. The
bell still has the chain attached which is very tempting...
There are a few graves with "weel kent" connections. The
Scottish family of Dame Nellie Melba are buried here (her parents
lived in Glen Prosen before emigrating to Australia), the family of
Peter Smith the farmers son who made his fortune in mining in South
Africa and who founded the town of Dundee there as well as the
Right Honourable William Baxter, MP for Montrose district in the
19th century. The botanist Thomas Drummond was born in the hamlet
and was baptised and married here before his travels overseas.
Now for the cache. You will need to wander around the church and
pay your respects at the war memorial to collect the
information.
One of the kirk windows has a stained glass attached to the
inside. This window, installed in 1997, was created by the artist
Aileen Ogilvie and is based on an original lino print by Barbara
Robertson. How many geese are there on this piece of glass?
