Geocache Description:

This multi-cache is a small lock-and-lock with room for some trading items. The difficulty rating is due to the time that may be required.

FSU Little Pictures

The idea for this cache has been taken from a small multi-cache that we saw in San Jose, CA in July 2007, called San Jose Little Pictures ( GCX3NT with thanks to "kablooey"). We started to do that cache, but we never finished it because one of the pictures took us into a wonderful outdoor farmers’ market. The rest was history because of the great time we had eating and browsing the farmers' market. In Pennsylvania, we've also done Laurelville Little Pictures ( GC155CP by "mghorst" & "Hawk05"). We enjoy this type of cache as a great way to explore a new location and hope some of you will also, but it's no "cache and dash".

The cache has been placed on the campus of Frostburg State University (FSU), an institution to which "acarina" has given much of his working life. The cache is a small pictorial walking tour of a part of FSU, especially for persons not associated with FSU (those associated with FSU would likely recognize where many of the pictures are located and it would be easier). Obviously you will need to make a copy of the FSU Little Pictures Collage (above, or "Visit The Gallery" below) to take with you so that you will know where the next location is that you are seeking. The coordinates will not take you to the cache, but rather take you to the location of the first picture (FSU entry sign on Braddock Road). From that site you should be able to see the second picture (in some form) IF you look in the right direction, following each picture to the next. It is not cheating to jump ahead if you are able to skip some pictures because you know where a later picture is located, but you will miss part of the campus tour. This is no "cache and dash", but rather is intended to give you a tour of a campus that has much history and beauty to offer to those who take time to view it. Most buildings have a plaque at one of their main entry doors, placed by the Student Government Association, which give a bit of history that you may find interesting; for example Old Main (Hall) is on the National Registry of Historic Buildings. (I have not used pictures of any of the plaques for the cache because that would make it too easy.)

Clearly some of the little pictures will look different from season to season, but I think I have included some feature in each picture that will not change. I took my photos in July so that there are no students shown.

Parking on campus Monday through Friday during regular semesters is restricted to PERMITTED PARKING ONLY, and I can assure you that campus police do some serious ticketing for illegal parking. You may park on all Frostburg city streets around the edges of campus (including Braddock Road near the starting point) unless otherwise posted. You may park on campus weekdays after 4:30 p.m. and Friday after 4:30 p.m. through Monday 7:00 a.m without permit.

If you desire, a campus map is available on the FSU website.

As previously stated, the posted coordinates are for the first picture. We have walked the cache route, and decided it should be rated a terrain of 2 because of the distance and some slopes involved. However, the entire campus is technically wheelchair accessible, and in that sense it could be a 1.0. The entire "tour" could easily take you an hour unless you are quick to spot the pictures and don’t take time to look at other interesting things. But we encourage you to take your time and enjoy the tour. When regular classes are in session, an evening (daylight) or weekend day would be easier. Please send an e-mail on anything that you think is a problem and might need changed.

Out of area visitors can most easily reach the beginning of the cache by exiting I-68 at exit 33, which becomes Braddock Road along the edge of campus, where the first picture is located.

For more information about the campus, visit the FSU website.
