The yacht club adjacent to Lutz park has quite an interesting
history. Between a number of fires that gutted the structure and
the push and pull for land between it and various government
entities, it's a wonder the club is still here.
In 1932, D men initiated the club by filling papers with the
State. Just E years later the structure was destroyed by not
one, but F fires. The club was rebuilt and served as the
Coast Guard Auxiliary meeting place for temporary reserves for
H years.
Then in 19BC, a decade after the first fires, another
disastrous fire brought the structure and club close to extinction.
But the club recovered and in the process added separate toilets
for both sexes which made everyone happy.
In 1963, a master plan was submitted to the city for a
G0,000 dollar clubhouse and new steel slips. There was some
wrangling in the ensuing years for the requisitioning of additional
club property and finally, in 19CJ, the club was able to
negotiate a J0 year lease on the existing property and
additional property up to the boat launch. The club finished its
renovations E years later and the club was now able to
accommodate 70+ boats ranging in size from AB to II
feet.
The recent Lutz Park renovations and improvements to the public
boat launch, coupled with the reopening of the Appleton and DePere
locks has the club excited to again be part of the resurgence of
river traffic on the Fox.
