Geocache Description:

The cache is located near a concrete structure three or four miles west of Wheatland. The structure caught my eye due to the date "1948" etched in it.

In 1948 President Truman signed the Marshall Plan which provided billions of dollars for the recovery of post-war Europe. Truman integrated the armed forces, and also re-instated the peace time draft--which many consider to be the beginning of the cold war (due to increasing tension with the Soviet Union). The nation of Israel was formed, the Berlin Blockade began, Ghandi was assassinated, and the Union of South Africa instituted "apartheid". The Hollywood 10 (writers, producers, directors) were jailed for contempt of Congress for failing to testify before the House Committee on Un-American Activities. The Polaroid camera was invented, as were LP records, velcro, the Scrabble game, and pre-packaged cake mixes. The first flight of a commercial jet airliner took place. James Michener won the Pulitzer Prize for his "Tales of the South Pacific," and Tennessee Williams won for his play "A Streetcar Named Desire."

In sports, the Cleveland Indians beat the Boston Braves in the World Series, and Citation won the horse racing Triple Crown. In the Olympics, Bob Mathias won the decathlon, and Dick Button won the first American gold medal in figure skating. Sports figures born in 1948 include Terry Bradshaw, Bobby Orr, Nate Archibald, and Peggy Fleming.

Other notable people born in 1948 include Al and Tipper Gore, Gary Trudeau, Billy Crystal, Samuel L Jackson, Olivia Newton-John, and Bernadette Peters. The musical "Kiss Me Kate" opened on Broadway and ran for over 1,000 performances. I think Mrs Prof and I are the only people left who enjoy the old musicals...
